I worked in the front-of-cafe for the Family Fun day until 11, then Fred & I went to get a present for a 9-year-old boy whose birthday F was invited to. It is a son of a lovely lady from the Home Ed group who is quite hippy as i would phrase it, she is vegan, into nature, being gentle, sharing and is in some sort of housing co-op, which i find intriguing. Yes I like to dip my toe into such things but then I like to retreat!
It is quite significant that we went because it is actually only the second time F has been personally invited to a birthday party. His brothers & sisters get constant invites, so he has felt quite left out.
Well. When we got there the adults were very hippy & alternative, which i was happy to spend a couple of hours getting to know them, they are bound to be interesting. However there were at least ten of the boy guests aged about 5-9 all naked on the bouncy castle! I asked F if he would take off his shoes, he said "Yes, but nothing else!!"
I was a bit taken aback by the sight, but of course there is nothing wrong with it - quite the opposite, but it is so unusual these days in our country. F wouldn't really countenance them. He went inside and had a go on their ethnic instruments & microscope, murmuring, "I hope he doesn't turn up at GAP naked next week" etc. I did some small talk with a few people & then after an hour we left.
As we walked to nan's I tried to explain that it wasn't planned, and this little chap doesn't always have naked birthdays! But F wasn't having any of it.
It was very interesting in their housing co-op, I would have loved to have learnt more. I cannot help smiling as I think of it but I hope I have not painted this lady & her family in a bad light, they really are very sweet & congenial.
P.s. we are going to nan's on Sunday to celebrate her & Laurie's 30th wedding anniversary.
